Summer bodies are made in winter

In Pietermaritzburg, winter is often a trigger to start eating more and working out less. When the season embraces us in an icy grip, our beds seem like the only place to be. Yet we want to be fit and healthy when summer arrives!

Research shows that habits formed in the winter are more likely to stick:

  • Jump out of bed as soon as your alarm goes off and keep your motivation firmly in mind.
  • Practice steady cardio. Just 15 minutes of cardio a day can increase life expectancy by up to three years.
  • Switch to home workouts – early morning gym sessions become a lot harder when you look out your window and it’s still pitch black.
  • Set goals related to your physique, but spend your time and effort, both in the gym and outside of it, on activities that will help you to move better doing whatever it is you want to do.
  • Eat one to two portions of fruit and three to five portions of non-starchy veggies per day, and drink two to three litres of water.
  • Exercise your abs, arms, chest, back and legs not only to see results, but to feel the health and strength benefits.
